Biology / Diversity of organisms

Biology / Diversity of organisms

The biological world is enormously diverse. There has to be an approach that enables us to get an idea of a group of organisms by studying a particular type. Living beings are classified as plants and animals.

Classification - the process of grouping similar things into groups or categories on the basis of similarities and differences.

Learn about Hierarchy of categories/groups - kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species and binomial nomenclature.
Five-kingdom classification by R.H.Whittaker :

  • 1. Kingdom Monera
  • 2. Kingdom Protista
  • 3. Kingdom Fungi
  • 4. Kingdom Plantae
  • 5. Kingdom Animalia

Major groups of plants :

  1. Thallophyta (thallus = undifferentiated; phyta = plant)
  2. Bryophyta (Bryo = moss; phyta = plant)
  3. Pteridophyta (first land plants with vascular bundles)
  4. Gymnosperms (Gymnos = naked; sperms = seed)
  5. Angiosperms (angio = enclosed ; sperma = seed) Angiosperms are divided into monocot and dicot

Classification of Animal Kingdom in order of their increasing complexity:
It is classified as phylum Porifera(porus = pore, ferre = to bear, porous animals = the sponges)

  • Phylum cinadaria (knide = nettle or stoing cell)
  • Phylum Platyhelminthes (platys = flat, helminthes = worms)
  • Phylum Nematoda(nema = thread, helmin = worm)
  • Phylum Annelida( annulus = ring, eidos = form)
  • Phylum Arthropoda (arthon = joint, podoa = foot)
  • Phylum Mollusca(molluscus = soft)
  • Phylum Echinodermata( echinus + spine, derma = covering/skin)
  • Phylum Protochordata(protos = first, chordata = notochord), Phylum vertebrata( animals with backbone)

Classification of vertebrates :

  1. Class Pisces (fishes)
  2. Class Amphibia (amphi = both bios = (life)
  3. Class Reptilia (reptare = to creep)
  4. ClassAves (avis = bird)
  5. Class Mammalia (mamma = breast)
