Microorganisms are tiny celled organisms like viruses, bacteria, fungi and are found everywhere. Learn about microorganisms

  • You will be aware of diseases such as swine flu, chinkun guniya. 
    Can you guess what are these diseases termed as ? They are microbial diseases since they are caused by micro organisms.
    They live in food we eat, air we breath, water we drink, soil, inside and outside our body. Some are unicellular (e.g. amoeba, fungi) and others are multicellular(e.g. volvox, spirogyra)
  • Do you know that antibiotics, mouth watering pastries, jellies, beverages are formed by the action of microorganisms. Yes, some microorganism are useful while others are harmful causing diseases in plants(e.g. potato blight) and animals(e.g. tetanus, cholera).
  • You may have experienced food spoilage at your home, it gives bad odour and unpleasant growth of moulds. This is again due to microorganisms. Therefore, food has to be preserved from getting spoilt.
  • Some methods to prevent food spoilage are:
  1. sterilisation,
  2. canning,
  3. irradiation,
  4. drying,
  5. salting,
  6. pickling or
  7. adding sugar.
