Biology / Some principles of biology

All living organisms - plants, animals and human beings are made of small structures called cells. Learn about the discovery of cell, different cell theories and the Invention of microscope.

Based on cell number organism are classified as Unicellular (single celled) and multicellular (more than one cell) organisms. The hierarchy level of organisation is : cell -> tissue -> organ -> organ system -> organism.

Understand the shape, size and components of cell, cell organelles and it functions and the difference between animal cell and plant cell

Transportation of substances in and out of the cell takes place by diffusion and osmosis

  • Diffusion: Movement of molecules from a region of higher concentration to the region of lower concentration is called diffusion
  • Osmosis- diffusion of water across a semipermeable membrane is called osmosis.

Types of osmosis based on the concentration of solution are:

  • Hyper tonic solution - plasmolysis
  • Isotonic solution
  • Hypotonic solution - endosmosis

Learn about the basic building block of living being - The cell, its structure and functions.

Photosynthesis

  • Plants make their own food using sunlight, water, carbon dioxide, and other minerals present in their environment.
  • Most of the plants use photosynthesis process to make their food using a green pigment in their leaves called Chlorophyll.
  • Some plants that do not have chlorophyll use different methods to make their food. They take food from other plants or even eat insects.
