Science / Reaching The Age Of Adolescence

Have you ever thought why some are tall and some are short in your class? This variation is due to inheritance of hormones. What are hormones? Where do they come from? Hormones are secreted by endocrine glands (ductless) of endocrine system directly into blood stream. The endocrine system consists of

  • Pituitary gland - secretes growth hormone and controls growth
  • Thyroid gland - thyroxin, controls metabolic rate
  • Adrenal gland(adrenaline, prepares body for emergency)
  • Pancreas(insulin, regulates blood sugar level)
  • Ovaries(estrogen)
  • Testes(testosterone) development of secondary sexual characters.

Puberty and Adolescence - are the two faces of a coin during growth and development. Adolescence is the time of growing up mentally, physically and socially.

Secondary sexual characters develop in both boys and girls during this period. Menstrual cycle(reproduction phase) is initiated by ovulation. Releasing an egg by one of  the ovary in an interval of every 28 to 30 days is called ovulation. If fertilisation take place a zygote is formed which develops in womb. If fertilisation does not take place, menstruation will take place. The thickened lining of the uterus along with blood vessels are shed, which results in bleeding for 4-5 days. Starting of menstrual cycle is menarche where as ending is menopause which marks the end of reproductive phase

Sex determination in Humans - Humans have only 23 pairs of chromosomes. Among these the last pair represent sex hormones represented as "XX" ( Female) and "XY"(male).
