Understand the relationship between electricity and magnet and study about interesting phenomenon of electromagnetism-""When an electric current passes through a conductor, a magnetic field is created around the conductor.""
Magnetic field around a straight current carrying wire is in the form of concentric circles and its direction is given by Right hand Thumb rule.
• Right Hand thumb rule - According to this rule, if you hold the current carrying wire in your right hand with the thumb pointing along the direction of the current, then the direction in which fingers curl gives the direction of the field.
Learn the magnetic field pattern in a circular coil and find polarity of the coil. When facing the coil, if the current flows in the clockwise direction, that face will be the south pole. If the current flows in the anticlockwise direction, that face will be the north pole.
Solenoid is a cylindrical coil of wire. When current flows in it, the solenoid behaves like a bar magnet. The ends behave like poles of bar magnet. Electromagnet is a piece of iron that remains magnet only as long as current passes through it and it loses its magnetism when current is switched off. Learn more about field pattern in solenoid and difference between electromagnet and permanent magnet.
Can you induce current by a magnet. Yes, by electromagnetic induction. The phenomenon where current is induced due to relative motion between a coil and a magnet is called Electromagnetic Induction. Current obtained is Induced current. Learn how electric motor and dynamo works and how Fleming's left and right hand rules are applied to find out the directions of magnetic field, current and motion.

Factoids

Hans Christian Oersted discovered in 1820 that an electric current near a compass causes the compass needle to be deflected. Oersted's experiment showed that every electric current has a magnetic field surrounding it.
