Magnetic field around a straight current carrying wire is in the form of concentric circles and its direction is given by Right hand Thumb rule.
• Right Hand thumb rule - According to this rule, if you hold the current carrying wire in your right hand with the thumb pointing along the direction of the current, then the direction in which fingers curl gives the direction of the field.
Learn the magnetic field pattern in a circular coil and find polarity of the coil. When facing the coil, if the current flows in the clockwise direction, that face will be the south pole. If the current flows in the anticlockwise direction, that face will be the north pole.

Factoids

Hans Christian Oersted discovered in 1820 that an electric current near a compass causes the compass needle to be deflected. Oersted's experiment showed that every electric current has a magnetic field surrounding it.
